Faced with an irregular shape, and asked to work out its surface area, can be daunting to students. As with more complex math problems, it's best to break this problem down in steps.
This MATHguide video demonstrates how to calculate the area of an irregular quadrilateral given four sides and an angle (SASSS). Given an irregular polygon where all of the angles are known, how many side lengths need to be known, at minimum, to determine the length of the remaining sides? Given all the angles and the requisite number of side lengths, how to actually calculate the remaining side length? Example: a 5 Sided polygon's interior angles will add up to 540 degrees. Finally, we add the two areas to work out the area of the irregular shape: 234 + 104 = 338 square inches. Grade 5 irregular shapes worksheets. In our grade 5 geometry section we have worksheets to practice both the area and the perimeter of irregular rectangular shapes. Grade 6 irregular.
Let's use an example. Work out the area of this shape.

It does look daunting, doesn't it? So, let's break it into steps.
This irregular shape is made of rectangles. How, do you say? We break it into its two rectangular shapes.
Now we have two rectangles.
The first rectangle is ABCD
A - B, / C - D is 18 inches long.
A – C / B – D is 21 – 8 inches long.
Let's explain that. The shape does not indicate how long B - D is. However, we have:
B - G = 21 inches and D – G = 8 inches
To work out B - D, we need to subtract D – G from B – G:
21 – 8 = 13
The area of ABCD = 13 x 18 = 234 square inches.
Now, let's turn our attention to the second rectangle: EDFG. Winnie the pooh drawings.
Again, we need to do some subtraction:
E – D / F – G is not indicated, but we have C – D and C – E.
To work our E – D, we subtract C – E from C – D.
18 – 5 = 13
Area EDFG = 8 x 13 = 104 square inches.

234 + 104 = 338 square inches.

Introduction
I just thought I would share with you a clever technique I once used to find the area of general polygons.
The polygon could be regular (all angles are equal and all sides are equal) or irregular

The Example Polygon
Let's use this polygon as an example:
Coordinates
The first step is to turn each vertex (corner) into a coordinate, like on a graph:
Area Under One Line Segment
Now, for each line segment, work out the area down to the x-axis.
So, how do we calculate each area?
Average the two heights, then multiply by the width
Example: For the shape highlighted above, we take the two heights (the 'y' coordinates 2.28 and 4.71) and work out the average height:
(2.28+4.71)/2 = 3.495
Work out the width (the difference between the 'x' coordinates 2.66 and 0.72)
2.66-0.72 = 1.94
The area is width×height:
1.94 × 3.495 = 6.7803
Add Them All Up
Now add them all up!
But the trick is to add when they go forwards (positive width), and subtract when they go backwards (negative width).

If you always go clockwise around the polygon, and always subtract the first 'x' coordinate from the second, it works out naturally, like this:
From | To | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
x | y | x | y | Avg Height | Width (+/-) | Area (+/-) |
0.72 | 2.28 | 2.66 | 4.71 | 3.495 | 1.94 | 6.7803 |
2.66 | 4.71 | 5 | 3.5 | 4.105 | 2.34 | 9.6057 |
5 | 3.5 | 3.63 | 2.52 | 3.01 | -1.37 | -4.1237 |
3.63 | 2.52 | 4 | 1.6 | 2.06 | 0.37 | 0.7622 |
4 | 1.6 | 1.9 | 1 | 1.3 | -2.1 | -2.7300 |
1.9 | 1 | 0.72 | 2.28 | 1.64 | -1.18 | -1.9352 |
Total: | 8.3593 |

You can also go the other direction. If you get a negative area just make it positive.
